ZAP Montérégie is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to provide free wireless internet access to users of portable PCs and other mobile devices in the Montérégie region on the south shore of Montréal, Canada. We use free open-source software and cost effective wireless equipment to share member’s existing high-speed internet connections.
Users can access the internet at certain locations called hotspots as long as they have a laptop equipped with a WiFi card or another compatible mobile device. We work with coffee shops, municipalities, and various organizations to provide the service in public areas.
It is our belief that this technology allows people to connect with each other and eventually contributes to the emergence of new communities of interests which are based on the sharing of information. So ZAP Montérégie intends to use its hotspots to promote exchanges between its users, to introduce original artistic creations using unfamiliar mediums and finally to provide interesting information at a local level.
